Free crochet pattern - Baby/toddler helmet or bonnet

Size: 12 months+....to change sizes just decrease or increase the amount of rounds at the back piece.

US terms
Any type yarn - for the stripy hat I used
4 ply baby yarn
8 ply for stripes

Size 4.00mm hook

Starting at centre back:
CH 3, join with SL ST to make a ring and do 6 SC into the ring.
2- 2SC in each stitch around
3- 1 SC in next stitch, 2 SC in next, REP around
4- 1 SC in next two stitches, 2 SC in next, REP around

Keep increasing the amount of SC stitches around by adding 1 more to each set before the INC of 2 SC in a stitch until you have....INC, 15 SC, INC on a side

Starting the hood:
1- 2 DC, miss 1, 2 DC (V-stitch) around leaving the neck open (one side)
2- DC in each stitch around

Then begin ribbed DC *RF/RB repeat* for 3 1/2 to 4 inches or about 12 rows.

The rib pattern is achieved by doing the stitch around the post of the stitch below - in front of the work first and then going around the post of the stitch below from the back for the second stitch)
Tutorial -http://www.stitchdiva.com/custom.aspx?id=126

Turn to work around the neck edge with a round of SC.
Then work *2 HDC, CH 1, skip 1, 2HDC*  around for the ribbon eyelets...
SC around neck edge once more
Finish off

Thread ribbon around neck eyelets to finish

OPTIONAL - change colors for stripes etc
It is wise to use a less flimsy yarn for the stripes to hold the shape of the bonnet if you are using 4 ply baby yarn for the rest.

I am a little confused about the V stitch part where the hood is started. Are you supposed to work 2 DC, ch 1, 2 DC all in 1 stitch?

Lovely pattern!!
